1 What AI calibration is
Screen calibration tells TrueClays where every point on the screen is, as seen by the tracking camera. In the other calibration modes you aim at each cross and judge with your own eye whether the laser dot is in the centre. Your aim is never perfect, and whatever the dot was off becomes part of the calibration.
AI calibration lets your phone do the measuring. The phone films the box you are shooting at, sees exactly where the laser pulse landed, and sends that position to TrueClays. The tracking camera sees the same pulse. TrueClays pairs the two, so it no longer matters whether you hit the exact centre — only where the dot really was.
- Your aim no longer affects the calibration. Any shot inside the box is as good as a perfect one.
- Three shots per box are averaged automatically.
- The phone follows along: it shows the box, the shot count and any problem as it happens.
- The PC moves to the next box by itself — no buttons to press between boxes.
AI calibration is new and released as a beta. It writes the same calibration as Expert calibration, so you can always go back to Expert or offline calibration. Your feedback helps us improve it — see section 10.
Watch the AI calibration video first: scan the QR code on the cover, or the right-hand QR code on the AI calibration start screen.
2 What you need
- A smartphone with a rear camera (tested with Chrome on Android; more phones are being tested during the beta)
- Internet on both the phone and the TrueClays PC
- Your laser gun or laser, working and seen by the camera
- A dark room — the projector image should be the only light on the screen
- A finished projector setup and installation (Installation Guide, section 5)
- About 15–20 minutes for all 56 boxes
Calibrate only when the projector is in its final position and the image is square and sharp. Moving the projector or changing keystone afterwards means calibrating again.
Check the cameras first with Camera diagnostics: new lines should appear only when you fire. If they appear without a shot, ambient light is reaching the camera — fix that before you calibrate.
3 Starting AI calibration
- Open the calibration panel. On the main screen, open System configuration and press AI Calibration. It needs an internet connection.
- Scan the left QR code with your phone's camera and open the page it shows. The page already knows which TrueClays system it belongs to — the code under the QR code (HWID) is filled in for you.
- Press Start on the phone. Allow the camera when the phone asks. That is all: the PC hides the QR codes and starts at box 1 by itself. You do not need to press anything on the PC.
start-screenChoose Projector 1 or Projector 2 on the start screen before you press Start on the phone, and calibrate each projector in turn.
A short buzz for every accepted shot, a double buzz when a box is stored. The phone screen stays awake while you calibrate.
Unlike Calibrate screen, AI calibration does not clear your existing calibration. Each box is replaced when it is stored; boxes you do not shoot keep their old values.
4 The phone screen
Everything you need is at the top. The rest can stay folded away.
phone-screen| Part | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Status card | The box to shoot, three circles for the shots (filled when accepted), what to do next and how many boxes are stored. Green = ready, amber = matching a shot. |
| Start | Starts the camera and the calibration. Becomes Restart camera afterwards. |
| Dots badge | Dots found, Hold still or Point at the box. |
| Camera view | What the phone sees. A green frame is drawn on the four dots when they are found. |
| Message line | Messages from the PC (section 8), under the camera. |
Camera controls
Shown when your phone supports them:
- Zoom — lets you stand back and still fill the picture with the box.
- Focus, Auto focus, or tap the picture to focus on that spot.
- Exposure — starts at its lowest setting on purpose (section 9).
Box selection and Advanced
Box, Go to box and Stay on this box are explained in section 6. Advanced is folded away and not needed for normal use: system code (HWID), camera choice, shot sensitivity, diagnostics and Send snapshot (section 10).
5 Calibrating, box by box
Each box takes three shots. The PC then stores it and moves on to the next box.
What you see on the screen
- The active box is green, with its number above it.
- Four white dots sit just outside its corners. The top-left dot is bigger — the phone uses it to know which way up it is.
- Box 12 READY 0/3 (or WAIT) is shown in the other half of the screen, away from the box, so the text never gets in the phone's way.
box-dots- Point the phone at the active box. Get all four white dots and the green box in the picture, with a little space around them. Use Zoom so you can hold the phone 30–50 cm from the screen.
- Wait for Dots found. If it says Point at the box, move until the dots are in view; if it says Hold still, steady your hand. Tap the picture if it is not sharp.
- Fire one shot anywhere inside the green box. Do not try to hit the centre. The phone measures where the dot really landed, so a shot near the edge of the box is exactly as good as one in the middle.
- Wait for READY before the next shot. While the PC matches the shot it shows WAIT; it takes about a second.
- Fire two more shots. After the third, the box is stored, the phone buzzes twice, and the next box turns green. The phone shows Box 12 saved - move to box 13.
- Repeat until all boxes are stored.
Fire, wait for READY, fire again. Two shots close together cannot be told apart, and both are thrown away.
In the other calibration modes every shot had to be dead centre on the cross, so you took your time to aim perfectly. In AI calibration that is not needed and gives no benefit. Shoot naturally and quickly — anywhere inside the green box. Taking extra time to aim only makes the calibration slower.
6 Redoing a single box
You can jump to any box at any time — to redo one that went wrong, or to touch up a single point later without a full calibration.
- Choose the box. On the phone, type the number in Box and press Go to box. On the PC you can also click the box with the mouse.
- Tick Stay on this box if you want to shoot the same box again and again. After every three shots it is stored again and the PC stays on it. The status card shows staying on this box.
- Untick it to go back to normal: after the next save the PC moves on to the next box not yet stored.
If you type a box number before you press Start, the calibration starts on that box.
7 Finishing and testing
- When all boxes are stored, the phone shows All boxes stored. Press Exit on the PC.
- Exiting early? The PC asks for confirmation and tells you how many boxes were not stored; those keep their old values. The phone shows Calibration closed.
- Test the screen calibration with Test screen calibration in System configuration. Fire at each cross. A point that is clearly off can be redone on its own (section 6).
- Check your gun calibration. A new screen calibration can shift where your gun hits. Fire a few test shots and calibrate the gun again if needed (Installation Guide, section 5).
8 Messages and what to do
Messages from the PC appear under the camera on the phone and on the screen. None of them stores anything wrong — the shot is simply not used.
| Message | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Point at the box | The phone cannot find the four white dots. | Get all four dots and the green box in the picture. Check focus. If the dots are visible but not found, raise Exposure one step. |
| Hold still | The dots are moving too much. | Steady your hand for a moment. |
| Tracker saw a shot but the phone did not | The PC saw your shot; the phone missed it. | Keep all four dots in view while you fire, and wait for Dots found first. |
| Phone saw a shot the tracker did not | The phone reacted to something that was not a shot. | Check for reflections or light flicker in the picture. Keep the phone still. |
| Shots too close together | Two shots came too close to tell apart. | Fire one shot and wait for READY. |
| Shot landed too far from box 12 | The shot was outside the box. | Keep the shot inside the green box — anywhere inside is fine. |
| Box 12: phone and tracker disagree | The three shots did not fit together; they were thrown away. | Shoot the box again. If it repeats, send a snapshot (section 10). |
Connection messages
These are about the link between the phone and the PC, not about your shots.
| Message | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Starting… stays on the phone | The phone is waiting for an answer from the PC. | Check that AI calibration is open on the PC and the PC is online, then press Restart camera. |
| Calibration closed | Exit was pressed on the PC. | Open AI Calibration on the PC again and press Start on the phone. |
| Could not reach the system | The phone has no connection. | Check the phone's internet and press Restart camera. |
| You see your own face | The front camera is in use: another app is holding the back camera. | Close other apps that use the camera (camera app, video calls, other browser tabs), then press Restart camera. |
| Enter the system code | The page was opened without the QR code. | Scan the QR code on the PC again, or type the HWID shown on the PC under Advanced. |
9 Tips for the best result
The Shot sensitivity slider under Advanced sets how strong a flash must be to count as a shot (lower = more sensitive, default 40). Lower it if shots are missed; raise it if the phone reacts to things that are not shots. Change it in small steps.
10 Beta: help us improve
Phones differ a lot in camera, lens and colour. Your feedback during the beta makes AI calibration work on more of them.
Send snapshot
If the dots are not found, or shots are missed, open Advanced on the phone and press Send snapshot while the problem is happening. It sends one camera picture and what the phone detected to TrueClays support. Then email support@trueclays.com with your system code (HWID) and a short description.
Diagnostics
Under Advanced you also find a live diagnostics line and a log of recent events. Hold freezes them so you can take a screenshot for support; Resume carries on.
- Tell us your phone model and browser.
- Include a screenshot of the phone page when something goes wrong.
- If one box keeps failing, tell us which box.
