TrueClays response to “Marksman ST3 vs TrueClays”

The article makes a number of statements about TrueClays. We have checked each one against the facts.

3 incorrect 1 misleading 3 incomplete
  1. 1. Updates

    Incorrect

Article: “Pay per update. Each new version is a separate charge.”

Fact: All software updates are free for the first year. After that, an update subscription is optional. The system works indefinitely with no time limit. You can subscribe at any later point, even years later, and your system becomes fully up to date.

  2. 2. Firearms

    Incorrect

Article: “Replica shotgun as standard. Your own gun needs a custom trigger.”

Fact: Shooters use their own gun with a lightweight laser attached, and they fire with the gun’s own trigger.

  3. 3. Setup and reliability

    Incorrect

Article: “Incredibly complicated to set up. The setup is fragile and may need a return to the factory.”

Fact: For a new user, installation takes under one hour on average. Since 2019, zero systems have been returned to the factory.

  4. 4. Shot timing (4.2 ms)

    Misleading

Article: Presents 4.2 ms as how far “the clay moves while the system catches up” (10.5 cm vs 2.5 cm).

Fact: The article’s own FAQ says 4.2 ms is the interval between barrel-tracking samples, “not a measured shot-to-screen delay.” TrueClays timestamps the shot to the millisecond. Within each 8 ms camera frame (120 Hz), the target’s hit area is moved to where the clay was at the exact millisecond of the shot.

  5. 5. Screen calibration

    Incomplete

Article: “A badly calibrated TrueClays screen can throw the hit a long way.”

Fact: A badly calibrated screen makes any simulator inaccurate, so this isn’t specific to TrueClays. TrueClays AI Calibration (beta) uses a smartphone to measure where each laser shot actually lands, so the shooter’s aim does not affect the calibration. A full calibration takes about 15–20 minutes. See trueclays.com/aicalibration.

  6. 6. Clay speed and Perceived Lead

    Incomplete

Article: “94% of real speed by default” and “Perceived Lead −40 to +40.”

Fact: Both are settings the user can change, not fixed limits. The default speed and the reason for it are documented in the setup guide.

  7. 7. Scope

    Incomplete

Article: “Clay specialist.” For rifle, running game or law-enforcement drills, it recommends Marksman only.

Fact: TrueClays covers sporting, trap, skeet, Compak and custom trap tables. Add-ons are available for hunting, UAS defense, and dynamic pistol and rifle shooting.

Not covered in the article

  • The target picture is continuous and does not stop or blank at the moment of the shot. This preserves swing and follow-through, including on the second barrel.
  • A hit breaks the clay into fragments in real time.
  • Optionally, the pellet cloud is simulated and shown in real time, based on choke and cartridge.

We invite anyone comparing simulators to try both systems and judge for themselves.

TrueClays is built by shooters, for shooters.
