TrueClays Room Requirements

Every room is different. Shooter height, projector choice and installation layout all affect the final requirements.

Optimal Dimensions Listed

We primarily list the optimal room requirements for each TrueClays setup.

However, the requirements are adaptive. Parameters such as the shooter's height, projector positioning and room layout directly affect what is possible.

If your room falls outside the recommended specifications, please contact us for consultation. In many cases we can still make the installation work by explaining the limitations and adapting the setup.

Important Environment Requirements

For Best Detection Accuracy

  • Fairly smooth white or light grey wall
  • Ideally painted using matte roof paint (non-reflective)
  • Very little ambient light in the room
  • No direct sunlight on the wall or shooting area

Wall Surface Recommendations

Detection Accuracy Comes First

The ideal setup is not necessarily the "best-looking" projection surface.

In fact, the most accurate shot detection is usually achieved using a simple, smooth wall painted in the dullest matte finish possible.

Our priority is not maximum image brightness — it is precision and reliable detection.

Can I Use My Golf Simulator?

Equipment Compatibility

The Golf Equipment Cannot Be Reused

TrueClays runs on its own dedicated hardware. The system computer runs Ubuntu with our own software, because a standard Windows machine cannot deliver the timing consistency the training requires.

The projector is just as specific. Only a handful of projectors on the market meet our requirements, so a golf simulator projector will not do the job.

It is easy to assume the two systems are similar, but in a golf simulator you hit a physical ball — a few milliseconds of delay change nothing. In TrueClays you track a moving target on the screen and break it in real time. It is true hand–eye coordination, and every millisecond is accounted for.

Why a Fraction of an Inch Matters

Our Detection Accuracy

On a 4.3 m (14 ft) wide screen we project a 1920 pixel wide image, which makes a single pixel roughly 2.2 mm (0.09 in) across.

A golf impact screen is built to flex and absorb a ball, so it can settle slightly differently from one session to the next. A movement far too small to notice by eye is enough to put the calibration off.

Why Sharing the Same Space Can Be Difficult

Projector Position

The Shooter Stands Close to the Screen

In TrueClays the shooter stands only about 2.0 m (79 in) from the screen, so our projector normally hangs closer to the wall than a golf projector. A projector mounted further back would throw the shooter's own shadow into the image.

Throw Distance & Brightness

Golf Projectors Are Mounted Further Back

In a golf bay the projector is placed well back so nobody hits it with a club. From that distance it needs considerably more brightness than our setup delivers — so the two projectors cannot simply swap places.

Surface Stability

The Impact Screen Moves

A golf canvas is designed to move. If it shifts even a fraction of an inch between sessions, the calibration is no longer valid. TrueClays needs a surface that sits in exactly the same position every time.

Possible Solution

A Drop-Down Screen in Front of the Golf Screen

If the room really is to be shared, one workable approach is a separate drop-down screen mounted in front of the golf impact screen, closer to the projector. That shortens the projection distance for TrueClays, so both projectors can sit at roughly the same distance from their own surface.
